Beating Eric Wolfram at his own “Higher on Google” game
March 1, 2005 8:10 pmEric Wolfram claims that he has been the #1 result on google for certain search terms such as "film gear" and " and "higher on google" for a long time.
Let’s see if I can use the same tips he gave out on how to increase your google ranking as ammo against him.
Firing the ammo now:
- Linking to your competition- I just did that above.
- Making your website useful- I believe there are many useful things to read on my website due to the logs that show that many people reach my blog from google searches.
- Back links to my website- I’ve seen some people on del.ici.ous link back to my website when they bookmark the url. I have no idea if anyone else out there are linking back to my blog.
- Using text strings instead of images for informational/navigation purposes- my blog is almost devoid of any images except for a few photos.
- Using correct keywords- I try to be as descriptive as I can and guess what people would be likely searching for to increase the click-through rate.
As I see that one of my blog posts is already on the first page of the same google results that Mr. Wolfram is #1 on, I don’t think I’ll be shelling out the $295 that he wants to improve your google search results. I believe that as long as you are honest on your blog and publish useful things that many people would find at least mildly interesting to read, Google’s amazing algorithms will reward you richly in the end.
