Closed Captioning on Google Video?

2:15 pm

A friend pointed me to the “Contact Us” page over at Google Video Help Center.  If you select the “Making a Suggestion” and hit the continue button, you’ll see a page with a list of feedback items to select from.

Imagine my surprise when I saw the words “Closed Captioning” as one of the suggestions!  The only reason I could come up with was that they have been receiving many complaints or suggestions about this feature.

The folks over at Google may be trying to gauge the general public interest in closed captioning on videos.  I would strongly advise you to submit a suggestion to Google Video to hire people to add closed captioning text to the videos or at least provide an easy self-captioner program that we can use on our own videos.

Tell them to take the lead in this field!  AOL is already making some headway in adding closed captioning to their videos.

**Update***
When I selected Closed Captioning as a suggestion, there was nothing I had to type in the suggestion box.  Apparently, they are counting “votes” via that page by requesting your name and email address.  Make sure they get as many votes as possible from you all!

We appreciate you sharing your feedback about Google Video beta. We
understand that you would like to include Closed Captioning for videos on
Google Video. Although we currently do not offer this feature, we’re
thrilled to have feedback from Google users about which features matter
the most.

We hope you’ll visit Google Video beta in the coming months to see our
additions and improvements.

Take a look at it. I love the spinning CC logo. It looks nice.

I find it odd that Google Video would 'explore' the CC 'feature'... After all, their strength is in text searching, and having captioning information would be quite invaluable to their business model, yes?

IMO, CC should have been in Google Video offerings since day one. Google should have provided the self-captioning tools for its users to provide CC content and make video searching all that much more easier.
