How Deaf blogs can help the News Media find the true voice of Deaf people

I saw this comment over at the DeafHateCrime blog which I felt was important to bring out so that more of you can see it for yourselves:

Hi there, My name is Lee Ann Kim, reporter for KGTV here in San Diego. I would like to interview some local deaf citizens regarding the need to educate the hearing community about the deaf culture (my cousin is deaf). If you are interested, can you please email or text me? newsdiva@gmail.com, text at: 858-922-8383. Also, does anyone know the identity of the victim?

Because of Pepe who took the time to start and keep up the DeafHateCrime blog, greater awareness has been brought to the City of San Diego. The news media people will eventually pick up on it and be able to find us and get in touch with us.  During the time before blogs, they couldn’t easily find us and our voices went unheeded.

Times- they are a-changin’!

KUSI news did cover a story about LLCN (http://emmoreylab.sdsu.edu/index.php) which the director, Karen Emmorey, discussed about their studies uncovering ASL as a language and how it functions in people’s (hearing/deaf) brains.
The only downside of that news story was that Rod Luck was a clod, as usual, with persistent praises of having those studies as opportunities for Deaf to learn how to speak again. Emmorey kept correcting him: “no, no, we already recognized ASL as a language… we just want to study THE language– it doesn’t matter if the person’s Deaf or Hearing… we just want to understand how a language work in a brain– let it be hands and eyes or mouth and ears.”

Just want to add this to show the increasing interest in the Deaf community by the news stations.
