Heading off to DC for the Blogging/Vlogging Conference

4:06 pm

I will be flying tomorrow night to DC to get ready for  “Vlogging/Blogging the Future of Gallaudet” conference this Saturday.

It’ll be an exciting trip for several reasons.  It’ll be the first time that my girlfriend, Heather, will get a real taste of the city as we visit the National Mall all day on Friday.  We plan to hit as many of the cool places to visit on the Mall.  I can’t wait to set foot again in the Air & Space museum and finally get to see the completed WWII memorial!

Coming from warm and sunny San Diego, we’ll probably be the shell-shocked Californians as we try to trek around in the freezing DC weather!

Taking an opposite tack from the last time I was in DC for the Gallaudet Protest when it was all a whirlwind for me, I’m anxiously looking forward to some downtime to catch up some of my old friends in DC who I have not seen for five years.

Saturday will be another exciting day when all the bloggers get together in one place and meet each other in person!  It’s somewhat surreal to actually recognize the person in the flesh, when you were only an online visitor their blog.

I’m certainly looking forward to the dialogue and the new ideas that will be shared with everyone that day.  This group of Deaf Bloggers is one of the new faces of the Deaf Community and their enthusiasm for the written words or signed videos will bring great things for all of us to talk and think about.

Without further ado, here’s a summary of what I’ll be talking about on my panel:

  1. Shortcomings of emails for distributing information on the Internet and why blogs are more effective for this purpose.
  2. How the power of blogs has disrupted the old media rules and how companies can take advantage of blogs for better customer relations.
  3. How Gallaudet University can use blogs to their advantage and to thrive in the 21st century.
  4. How the blogs aggregation at DeafRead.com is fostering the new social media of the Deaf Community.
  5. Why the growth of this social media is vital for all Deaf people in America and presents Gallaudet University a new way to reach out to many more Deaf people.

Of course, after the conference, there’s the Hawk Relay sponsored banquet where DeafRead Blog Awards will be announced!  This will be an enjoyable evening as we all continue to get to know each other some more and make our DeafBlogLand a better place to be!

Be seeing you all there!

  • John, Thanks for the book! I got it from Tayler. I'll keep this one because it has your autograph! I'll bring it with me on the plane to read too- that is if I remember to pack it :-) A bit chaotic for me right now!
  • Jared,
To make your flight short across the country, read the MindField book you got.

Bundle up, for the quick move of the colder snap plus gust and snow is expected between 25 and 35 in temperatures in Washington for the next five days! By the way, do you know where the conference takes place at Gallaudet? In Elstad Auditorium?
