Netflix Watch Now- watch streaming movies online! subtitled?

12:45 pm

Netflix offers a feature that is not promoted yet but can be enabled if you know where to go.  Netflix Watch Now is a service where you can start watching streaming movies on your computer.

I certainly hope that they will be offering subtitled versions of the movies too!  They have to realize that not everyone will be able to hear the audio!

This online watching feature is just starting to warm up and has not yet been battle-tested, however I hope they will be able to take advantage of this beta testing period to bake in code to add the subtitled versions so that all of their customers can enjoy the movies.

  • The big 3 networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) has an online library of recent shows, but none of them are captioned. What's the alternative? Get cable and a DVR or buy your own tivo with monthly fees.

I should write a blog soon about why Deafs should pay the full price for cable subscription when most programs/commercials are not captioned. Many HDTV channels are still not fully captioned, so we have a long way to go. Perhaps if all deafs demand 50% off on cable because of the amount of shows captioned, we can make a difference.

    Oh man....

I get those "canned responses" a lot...then I have to choose between 2 options:

1.) Fight it all the way.

2.) Or just forget it because I don't have the time deal with that BS.

Unfortuantely, I pick option #2 all the time....

We need to organize a collective effort....

Actually, there was a post on this very subject at DeafDC.com back in January. The guest writer of that blog indicated that she had contacted Netflix about captioning their/subtitling their movies on this service, and got a response indicating that "their instant viewing movies do not have closed captioning. We may offer this in the future, but do not have a time frame for this."

In another words, they may...then again, they may not.

I myself sent in an email, and go the same sort of canned response.

Frankly, I think it is going to require the collective efforts of the Deaf Community to get them to rethink such a response, and start thinking in terms of offering closed captioning of such a service.

Did you E mail them and ask whether they were planning on subtitling their movies?

I left Netflix for Blockbuster....the in store exchange is tough to beat. However, if Netflix were to upload its entire film library online and it all were captioned/subtitled...I could be tempted to switch back.....
