Update on Blackberry 8800 – the GPS sucks

9:52 pm

One of my favorite electronic devices is my Garmin GPSMAP 60cs  (now  discontinued and replaced with the Garmin GPSMAP 60csx).  I know very well what GPS units are capable of and what their limitations are.

To put it mildly, the GPS on the Blackberry 8800 is utter crap!

Why?  One of the major reasons for having a GPS unit is to be able to navigate the streets of a strange city.  The Blackberry 8800 GPS is simply not up to the task.  It isn’t fast enough or reliable enough.

When I took it out on a trial run in San Diego, it would work well for a few minutes and track my movement closely then it just simply stops updating the location on the map for several minutes at a time.

Since I am driving around in a fast-moving vehicle, I would travel a good distance in a few minutes.  Because the Blackberry 8800 GPS lags too far behind, I would potentially pass through the intersection where I should make a turn.

It’s possible that the GPS on my Blackberry 8800 is defective.  I will be bringing in my Blackberry 8800 to be replaced and see if the GPS lag is corrected.

Today, I drove the same route with
the GPS on the Blackberry 8800.  It performed much better this time
around.  Maybe yesterday during my first trial run, there weren’t
enough GPS satellites in the sky for the Blackberry to get a secure
lock on.  Today, it kept a lock on 7-9 satellites and was able to
continually update my location on the moving map.  I’ll need more time
before I can reach at a definite conclusion regarding the GPS
capabilities of the Blackberry.

It’s now a given- the Blackberry GPS is extremely fickle. Don’t count on it to get you out of potentially sticky situations while you’re driving around in an unknown area.

The GPS routing problems that I have been experiencing seem limited to the Google Maps for Blackberry app. I have another GPS routing app called TeleNav and so far every time that it was used for navigating, it has performed flawlessly.  It appears that the Google Maps app itself may be the problem, not the built-in GPS.

  • Hey Jared. Just curious - wouldn't using BB as a GPS device in California violate the state law against using cellphone? IIRC operating a hand-held device is illegal. For sure, speaking, texting, and dialing a number on a mobile is illegal but monitoring your progress using the GPS feature? I'm curious.

Blackberry is not intended to be used as a GPS while driving as it is unsafe. That being said, while sitting in the passenger seat of a moving car at city speeds, my 8800 seems to keep up fairly well with minimal lag. Given that it is a smart phone and not a dedicated GPS, I think it works extremely well for what it is, especially if you simply look ahead a step or two and be prepared. While on foot, it is flawless. I have no complaints and love my 8800.

I have had the 8800 for several months and I use it to navigate myself to at least 3 to 5 dif. addresses around LA area everyday... I pay the extra money to have the Tele-Nav program and find that it works very well, but the Google maps appliation only works holf the time but I do use it everyday to find the nearest Kinko's or anything I am looking for or see what traffic is like...

Rich, regarding T-Mobile ... I have had my 8800 for about a month and my carrier is T-Mobile.

The GPS works fine for me out-of-the-box, and I use the TeleNav application mentioned earlier in this thread. TeleNav reads the internal address book and its directory search capabilities are excellent.

When the 60-day free trial ends, I will pay the additional $10/month to continue the TeleNav service, and have had no problems with the GPS (thus far, anyway!).

    Hope this helps.

I'm thinking about getting a Blackberry 8800, however the t-mobile site for that phone doesn't list the GPS feature!
I called t-mobile customer support and was told that we {t-mobile} don't use that feature or its not supported. Anyone able to verify if the 8800's from t-mobile have the GPS disabled or rendered un-functional, perhaps via custom software build?

I have used GoogleMaps Mobile (GMM) for a long time now and I have always loved it for what it was, yet anticipated its GPS debut. Before I upgraded (yesterday) I began using the just-released Yahoo Mobile (YM)for the 8800. It's VERY slick. Though the YM business finder is clunkier than GMM's, its GPS is *highly* accurate and constantly updates. I have used TeleNav for 4 months now, and with YM, I may suspend my $10/mo subscription for this free service. Over night Yahoo clobbered Google with this--a feat I thought could not happen.
  • Jared, I have tested and blogged about a number of different software packages which use the BlackBerry 8800 GPS. I have found both Telenav and Wisepilot give good dynamic routing. Google Maps is currently more geared to displaying a high quality map of your current location, but struggles to keep up if you are moving rapidly - this is a bandwidth issue with the map data rather than a GPS issue. In other words, I agree with your later comment that it is a software issue rather than a GPS issue. For real time navigation, I think Telenav is currently the best choice in North America and WisePilot in Europe.
  • Thanks for sharing it with us.

It will be useful from time to time but portable standalone GPS still rocks.

  • If I want to connect my laptop to the 8800 and use it as a high-speed modem, I have to subscribe to a plan that will starts at $80/month. No thanks.

    Jared:

Did you try with a laptop? You can connect your 8800 as a modem. Let me know if that works.

I tried with my 8700g and I noticed a little bit of a lag when I am out of the city limits. I am a customer of T-Mobile.

I will attend the Sprint's Coffee time tonight. There will be BlackBerry pager displayed and I am thinking about getting 8703e. What would you suggest?
  • Judge
    It won't. :(

You should have a stand-alone GPS!!
